The sacred bulls of the Memphis-based Apis cult were interred at the Serapeum of Saqqara in ancient Egypt.
It was thought that the bulls represented the god Ptah's eternal after-death form, Osiris-Apis, whose name later changed to Userhapi in Coptic and Serapis in the Hellenistic era.
